Instagram's Edits comes to the Mac to compete with CapCut on desktop
Meta's short-form editor Edits now has a Mac app with captions, licensed music, 4K exports without a watermark and direct posting to Instagram. No Windows version was announced.
Instagram has released Edits, its short-form video editor, as a Mac app. TechCrunch reported the launch on 5 Nov and framed it as a direct move against CapCut, which has had Windows and Mac apps since 2021.
According to Instagram, the desktop version is meant for projects that outgrow a phone screen. It includes licensed and royalty-free music, sound and video effects, and automatic captions in several languages. Text and audio styles you saved on mobile sync across, and you can set your own keyboard shortcuts or import them from another editor. Exports go up to 4K in vertical or horizontal formats without a watermark, and you can publish straight to Instagram with tags and location.
Instagram says it will ship weekly updates and is still working on letting one project move freely between phone and desktop. TechCrunch’s report mentions only Mac, not Windows.
If you edit Reels on a Mac and mostly post to Instagram, Edits is worth a try before paying for CapCut Pro. If you work on Windows or need CapCut’s AI tools and templates, nothing changes yet.
