Pika vs Runway
Two text to video tools side by side: pricing, free plans, features and who each one suits.
Unranked in Text to video

A rebuilt creative app that puts Seedance, MiniMax, Wan, Pika 2.5 and image and audio models behind 25+ focused apps, from Video Studio to Pikaffects
Best for: Social creators, marketers and small studios who want many video, image and sound models in one simple app, without picking a model for every task.
#10 in Text to video

The AI video lab behind Gen-4.5 and Aleph, with a full creative suite for generating, editing and extending footage, plus Kling, Seedance and other models
Best for: Filmmakers, editors, agencies and brand teams who want frontier video models plus serious editing tools, and are willing to pay per second of footage.
Pika or Runway?
If you make social clips and want low cost with little to learn, choose Pika. If you edit real footage, work in Premiere Pro or After Effects, or want a lab’s own frontier model, choose Runway.
What each one is built for
Pika relaunched in September 2026 as a set of small apps on top of third-party models such as Seedance 2.5, MiniMax H3 and Wan 3.0, with Pika 2.5 kept for Pikaframes. Each app does one job and can choose the model for you. Video, images and sound share one balance.
Runway is a full production suite built around its own Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 models, with apps for relighting and removing objects, node workflows, team review and editor plugins. It also offers Kling and Seedance, at its own credit rates.
What it costs at typical use
Assume 10 five-second clips a month on monthly billing. Pika only publishes 720p costs, and Runway’s review does not give Gen-4.5’s native resolution, so this is not a strict like-for-like on quality.
- Runway Standard, $15: Gen-4.5 is 60 credits per clip, so 10 clips take 600 of 625 credits. There is almost no room for retakes.
- Pika Starter, $10: Seedance 2.5 at 720p is 122 credits, so 10 clips need 1,220. Starter’s 900 covers only 7. The smallest top-up pack is $25, so the realistic plan is Creator at $35, which leaves about 1,900 credits spare. On Wan 3.0, at 33 credits, the same 10 clips use 330 and fit Starter easily.
- Pika 2.5: its credit cost is not on Pika’s pricing page.
So Runway is the cheaper choice for exactly 10 flagship clips. Pika wins when a lighter model like Wan is good enough, or when you want many more clips on Creator. Check licensing too: Pika’s pricing table marks commercial use only from Creator, and its help center says all paid plans include it. Runway’s paid plans have no watermark; its review does not discuss commercial terms.
Which to pick
- Pick Pika if you want quick social content, effects like Pikaffects, sound and images in the same plan, or the cheapest entry to Seedance. See the Pika review.
- Pick Runway if you need to fix and extend footage, cut inside a pro editor, or share work with a team. See the Runway review.

Strengths and weaknesses
Pika
- Starter at $10 a month is one of the cheapest ways into Seedance 2.5
- Every plan, including Free, gets all models and no watermark
- Credit cost per generation is shown before you generate, and the pricing page converts credits into clips
- Apps are small and focused, so you do not need to learn a big suite
- Top-up credits last 365 days instead of resetting monthly
- Video, image and audio in one subscription
- The free account includes no monthly credits; you must buy a pack to generate
- Free accounts get no commercial license, even with bought credits
- Starter's 900 credits buy only about 7 Seedance 2.5 clips at 720p
- Monthly plan credits do not roll over
- Subscriptions and credit packs are non-refundable
- Pika may use your uploads and creations to improve its models
- Top-up credits do not work in the API, the iOS app or old.pika.art
Runway
- Runs its own frontier models, not only resold ones
- Video editing tools go well beyond generation, from object removal to relighting
- Premiere Pro, After Effects and Resolve plugins fit real post-production
- Public per-model credit costs make budgeting predictable
- Every paid plan gets all video and image models and no watermark
- Team plan with pooled credits and frame-accurate comments
- Standard's 625 credits buy only about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month
- Free credits are one-time, roughly 10 seconds of Gen-4.5
- Credits do not roll over on Standard or Pro
- Pricing page labels yearly billing both "2 months free" and "20% off"; the actual saving is 20%
- Studio-grade output such as HDR and ProRes is Max-only
- The breadth of tools and models has a learning curve for casual creators
