OpusClip or Submagic?

The real split is where your footage starts. OpusClip is built to take a one-hour podcast and hand back a stack of vertical clips. Submagic is built to take a short clip you already filmed and make it look finished, with captions as the main event. If you record long shows, start with OpusClip. If you film short to-camera videos, start with Submagic.

What each one is built for

OpusClip charges by minutes of source video, so it expects long uploads. Its extras sit around that job: virality ranking, reframing, a scheduler, and XML export so an editor can finish the best clips in Premiere or Resolve.

Submagic caps how long each video can be: 2 minutes on Starter, 5 on Pro, 30 on Business. That tells you its center of gravity. It does have Magic Clips for long recordings, but the plan limits for clipping are not published, so you cannot plan a weekly podcast around it from the pricing page alone.

What it costs at typical use

Say you clip four one-hour episodes a month. That is about 240 OpusClip credits. Starter’s 150 is not enough, so you land on Pro at $14.50 a month billed yearly, with 60 credits to spare that roll over.

Now say you film 30 short talking-head videos a month instead. Submagic’s Starter covers about 15 videos, so you need Pro at $23 a month yearly. It also lifts the cap to 5 minutes and adds silence trimming and publishing.

Teams change the math. OpusClip Pro includes two seats. Submagic bills each member, so two people on Pro pay $46 a month on yearly billing.

Which to pick

  • Pick OpusClip if your raw material is long podcasts, streams or interviews, you want ranked clips to choose from, or an editor finishes your cuts in a desktop app.
  • Pick Submagic if you film short videos to camera, captions are the edit you make on every post, or you want caption files (SRT or green screen) to use in another editor.

Plenty of creators use both: OpusClip to find the moments, Submagic to style them.

Strengths and weaknesses

OpusClip

  • Free plan that refreshes every month, no card needed
  • Works from links to YouTube, Zoom, Twitch, Riverside, Vimeo and other sources on Pro
  • Clips, captions, edits and schedules in one place
  • Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve export lets an editor finish the cut
  • Pro credits roll over for two months
  • Team workspace and brand templates suit agencies
  • Credits are minutes of source video, so a two-hour podcast eats most of a Starter month
  • Starter has no yearly discount and caps you at 9:16
  • Free clips are watermarked, cannot be edited and expire after 3 days
  • The virality score is OpusClip's own prediction, not a measure of real reach
  • Prices on the pricing page changed between our two checks in the same week
  • Affiliate page says commissions last the first year, while its FAQ says they continue while the referral stays subscribed

Submagic

  • Free tier limits are not spelled out on the pricing page
  • Credits per month are fixed, so heavy posters will need Business or custom
  • Accuracy and language figures differ between Submagic's own pages
  • Not a full editor for long-form or multi-track projects
