Descript or OpusClip?
These tools do different jobs on the same recording. Descript is where you edit the whole episode: cut the rambling, fix a flubbed word with your voice clone, clean the audio. OpusClip is where you turn the finished episode into a pile of vertical clips. If you publish the full episode, you need an editor first, so start with Descript. If you only post clips, OpusClip is the shorter path.
What each one is built for
Descript treats the transcript as your timeline, then layers on audio repair, voice clones, an AI co-editor, remote recording and export to pro editors and DAWs. It can pull highlights for social with Create Clips, but our review does not detail how deep that feature goes.
OpusClip skips the long edit and goes straight to short-form: picking moments, scoring them, reframing to vertical, styling captions and scheduling posts.
What it costs at typical use
Take four one-hour podcast episodes a month.
- Descript Hobbyist ($16 a month yearly) gives 10 media hours, so your 4 hours of uploads fit with room for retakes. Studio Sound and filler-word removal each cost at most 30 AI credits per file. Running both on every episode is at most 240 credits, inside Hobbyist’s 400. Heavy use of the AI co-editor is harder to predict, since its cost varies per request.
- OpusClip Pro ($14.50 a month yearly) gives 300 credits, enough for those 240 minutes.
Many podcasters run both: about $30.50 a month on yearly billing for a full edit plus clips. One catch is that Descript’s minutes and credits reset every month, while OpusClip Pro credits roll over for two months.
Which to pick
- Pick Descript if you publish full episodes or YouTube videos, want to fix mistakes without re-recording, record remote guests, or hand timelines to Premiere, Final Cut or a DAW.
- Pick OpusClip if short clips are your main output, you want them ranked and scheduled, or someone else already edits the long version.
